About the Highwaymen

The Highwaymen are a group of 26 African American landscape artists, befriended and unofficially mentored by the Ft. Pierce artist A.E. “Beanie” Backus.  Despite facing many racial and cultural barriers, they created a large body of work and accumulated a large following of collectors over the decades. Their works having been displayed in the White House and the Smithsonian, along with many museums and exhibitions. Mostly from the Fort Pierce area, they made a living selling art door-to-door to businesses and individuals throughout Florida starting in the mid-1950s.  They have been called "The Last Great American Art Movement of the 20th century" and were inducted into the Florida Art Hall of Fame in 2004.
